The Challenge:
As part of a cost-saving effort, the Department of Energy (DOE) decided to close all onsite data centers and transfer that information to the cloud. Edgewater was tasked with migrating the onsite data center servers located in Germantown, Maryland to the Microsoft Azure cloud environment. A critical step was to review various Chief Financial Officer (CFO) mission–critical applications, including Employee Self Service (ESS), DOEInfo, CHRIS Portal Website, MIS/Identity Management, GoTravel, DOE Payroll Processing System (DPP) and Foreign Travel Management System (FTMS) to determine how this massive migration can be accomplished with minimal impact to DOE users. This challenge was daunting, as these systems impact over 14,000 DOE employees and contractors, as well as the supporting databases and interface partners.
