Through the generous support of a Frederick County business partner, Edgewater Federal Solutions, Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) is thrilled to announce a new partnership with Edgewater and the Baltimore-based Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation, to establish new innovative STEM centers in selected FCPS elementary schools.

The Ripken Foundation STEM Centers are part of a national model in place at 307 sites nationwide. The shared commitment is to continue to expand access and opportunities in STEM areas and provide early exposure to content and skills essential to the future STEM workforce.

In 2023-24, the STEM Centers will launch at Tuscarora Elementary and Whittier Elementary schools. Each center will contain hands-on materials, including Snap Circuits, Ozobots, Little Bits, and Bee Bots, for students to engage in experiential learning at designated times during and outside the school day. The Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation, in collaboration with FCPS, will provide training, teacher resources, equipment and staff support.

“This is wonderful news,” said FCPS Superintendent Cheryl L. Dyson. “We definitely appreciate Edgewater Federal Solutions and the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation working to advance STEM education in Frederick County. Tuscarora and Whittier students will greatly benefit from this partnership.”

In September, the Ripken Foundation, Edgewater Federal and leadership from FCPS will host a ribbon cutting ceremony at Tuscarora Elementary to celebrate the collaborative partnership and shared enthusiasm for STEM education for students in FCPS.

“We’re extremely proud to once again partner with the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation to place two STEM Centers in Frederick County Public Schools. These centers will help expand minds and give children a great opportunity to explore the world of STEM through fun, interactive programs and equipment,” said Dave Yockman, Edgewater’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO). “The skills learned at these centers will help further educate these students and grow our community.”
