It’s no surprise that the job market, especially for tech-focused job seekers, is turbulent right now. Having insight into the recruiting process is key to nailing the resume and interview steps and landing the job. First impressions – even on paper — are everything, so how can you put your best foot forward with recruiters? We spoke with four Edgewater recruiters to see what they look for when seeking out candidates.

“Be confident, demonstrate true interest, and be engaged in a conversation with the recruiter. Your resume is your calling card, so be sure to accentuate your accomplishments, and be consistent with grammar and layout.

When it comes to the interview, it always stands out to me when someone educates themselves on the position and the company. Asking questions is an excellent way to get to know more about the expectations of the role. I also recommend that you live in the moment during an interview. Remove all distractions and give your undivided attention to the recruiter.” – Skip Williams, Senior Technical Recruiter

“I always value authenticity and honesty when I’m speaking with someone about their past experience and skillset. Even if your skills don’t exactly match what we’re looking for, demonstrating a positive attitude and willingness to learn is everything! Going into an interview, be prepared to talk about your experience and give one or two examples of the work you’ve accomplished. It helps to practice your answers with someone else, so you feel more relaxed and prepared.

During and after the interview, manners and gratitude go a long way. A simple thank you note can make the biggest difference when setting yourself apart.” – Laura Lutts, Senior Technical Recruiter

“When it comes to your resume, make sure it’s updated and streamlined before you even start looking for a new job. It’s always worth it to look at your whole resume, not just your previous job, because recruiters look at your whole resume and will ask you about past positions. Then going into the interview, take another look at your resume to make sure you can confidently speak about every point included in it. A solid rule of thumb is that if it’s in your resume, it’s fair game to talk about.

In the interview, give more than ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answers, but don’t ramble. Then, take the opportunity to vet us and see if it’s a good fit for you and what you want from the job. The best interviews don’t feel like interviews, rather a conversation among colleagues.” – Kevin Collins, Senior Technical Recruiter

“Develop a solid 2-3 minute elevator speech for yourself. This is a fantastic opportunity to introduce yourself, give a high-level overview of your accomplishments and capabilities, and explain why you’re passionate about the work you do. I always tell my candidates that interviews are one of the only socially acceptable platforms to brag about yourself, so do it! We want to hear about your successes.” – James Hall, Recruiter
